Teen tEch Center Mural

Designer, Marketing, Leadership

Project Brief

Client: The North Stars YMCA Youth Institute

Clients Mission: To provide services and support among low income youth/families and to use technology as a medium to support teens development.

Task: Create a mural design that represents the North Stars YI

Project Goals

To create a fully original design that incorporates diversity, represents the community of Long Beach, and include the teen participants in the designing/ production process.

From Concept to Production

My role was

  • create/ design the piece
  • present to Best Buy funders and YMCA Directors
  • create a task plan for the event
  • marketing on social media and flyers to recruit youth participants
  • lead mural painting day with youth participants

Tools Applied

The problem

  • How do I represent the YMCA, Best Buy, and the youth we serve.
  • Youth participants and Best Buy employees must be able to paint/ recreate the artwork

My Insight

Have youth participants be a part of the creative process to give them a sense of ownership of the design.

Do not add too much detail, make it more illustrative.

My Solution

A simplified illustration that shows hands giving all the tech to kids.

Concept

A “From us to you” vibe. Hands that are “giving” all of the tech from the teen tech center. At first there was more realistic graphics but it needed to be simplified for the youth participants to be able to paint in one day.

Sketching Process

I traced each aspect from real life photos. I tired using simpler graphics for the youth to be able to paint. But I was constantly going to the participants for feedback and applying it for the next iteration.

Design and Application

Traced and illustrative graphics with YMCA and Best Buy branding. Extra touch of youth participants hands covering bottom half.

The Result

A painted mural outside the Teen Tech Center that represents the YMCA youth Institute
